About Demist

Demist transcribes lectures, reads them back, and explains and translates unfamiliar terminology in real time for university students, including those who find lectures harder to follow. It is provided as-is to support personal learning. By using Demist, you agree to these terms.

Who can use Demist

You must be 16 or over to use Demist. We ask for your date of birth when you set up your account and check it against this requirement.

This is because recording a lecture also records other people, including your lecturer, and the section below makes obtaining any consent that requires your own responsibility. That is a reasonable thing to ask of a student in sixth form or above, and not something we are willing to ask of a younger child. If you are under 16, please do not create an account. If you already have one, contact us at hello@demist.app and we will remove it and send you a copy of anything stored against it.

Acceptable use

Demist is for your personal study only. You are responsible for ensuring you have any permissions required to record or process lectures at your institution: in microphone mode, transcripts are only saved if you've declared a support need in your profile or your lecturer has given written consent. Do not use Demist to redistribute others' lecture content publicly or in any way that infringes copyright or performers' rights.

Separately from that: it is your own responsibility, not Demist's, to obtain any consent required by law before recording another person, including a lecturer or other speakers, in your jurisdiction and at your institution. Demist does not verify or enforce this on your behalf, whatever your device or account settings say about what happens to a transcript afterward.

Automatically generated content & no professional advice

Term definitions and summaries are generated automatically and may occasionally be inaccurate, incomplete, or misleading. They are not professional, medical, legal, or academic advice. Always verify anything important against your course materials, textbooks, or a qualified professional.

Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, Demist and its creators are not liable for any loss or damage arising from your use of the service or reliance on automatically generated content. The service is provided without warranties of any kind, express or implied.

Accounts & termination

You may delete your account at any time from your profile settings. We may suspend or terminate accounts that misuse the service, abuse our systems, or violate these terms.

Demist Pro

• Demist Pro is a paid monthly or annual subscription, billed automatically until cancelled. Payments are processed by Stripe; we never see or store your card details.
• You can cancel anytime from your profile page, which opens Stripe's billing portal. Cancelling stops future billing; access continues until the end of the period already paid for.
• Accounts created from 23 September 2026 get Pro free for their first 30 days, with no card required. When those 30 days end the account moves to the free plan automatically; nothing is charged and nothing is deleted, but lectures older than the free history window are hidden until you upgrade.
• Everyone who confirmed their email on the Pro waitlist before launch received one free month of Pro automatically, at no cost and with no card required.

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms from time to time. We'll update the date at the top of this page when we do. Continued use of Demist after a change means you accept the updated terms.
